sembra che tu intenda la fotografia precisamente come
uno strumento per trasmettere una tua precisa visione
del mondo. Come certi scrittori riescono ad avere
questa precisione di linguaggio, sembra che le tue
foto siano, come dire, delle radiografie della tua
anima. Vedendole capisci come ti sentivi quando le
hai scattate. Per uno scrittore la lingua non è
nemmeno uno strumento: diventa semplicemente la maniera
più naturale che conosce per comunicare; per
te è lo stesso con la fotografia?
E' un'ottima osservazione, ed è pure
difficile trovare una risposta. Scrivere può
risultarmi molto difficile. Quello che voglio è
che l'espressione, sia nella scrittura che nella fotografia,
sia un'esperienza mistica, che le parole o le immagini
pongano delle domande, e io ne sono il veicolo. E'
un concetto molto naïve in un certo senso. Entrambe
sono molto impegnative. La fotografia mi riesce più
facile, ma capisco che comunicare con le parole o
con le immagini può essere ugualmente difficile.
Del resto è probabile che una persona che recepisce
qualcosa guardando una foto non sprecherebbe un solo
minuto per leggere un testo nella sua interezza se
non c'è qualcosa che l'attira. Per me scrivere
è un'esperienza tanto personale quanto la fotografia,
nel senso in cui tu ne parli. E' molto rivelatore.
Quando fotografo voglio che ogni immagine comunichi
qualcosa di intimo e nascosto riguardo al soggetto.
Voglio svelare qualcosa, voglio essere intimo e sincero.
Quindi il mio lavoro si basa sull'essere onesto sia
col soggetto che con me stesso: passarci del tempo
assieme, condividere il silenzio, avere uno spirito
amicale.

It seems that you consider photography a way to
communicate your vision of the world and life. Some
writers can achieve a very sharp skill to write about
life and people; your work seems to have the same
quality: it looks like – how can I say –
xrays of your soul. When I see your pictures I can
understand how you felt when you took them. Language
is to a writer the fastest way he knows to communicate;
is photography the same for you?
That's a great observation. And
difficult to answer. Writing can be extremely difficult
for me. I think that I want expression, in either
writing or photography, to be a mystical experience--that
the words or the images are there for the asking and
I'm the conduit translating them. But that's very
naïve in a way. They both require hard work.
I thought photography came more naturally to me--I
still do--but I'm understanding now that it is equally
as difficult to communicate effectively with images
as it is with words. However, it may be easier for
the casual viewer to simply look at an image and get
something from it for a second, whereas, that same
type of person may not even bother to read something
in it's entirety if it doesn't reel him in immediately.
When I have the opportunity to write, it is also very
personal just as you describe my photography. It is
very revealing. When I shoot, I do want every image
to communicate something deep or internal about the
subject. I want it to be revealing and close and true.
So the work is in being very honest with my subjects
and myself; spending time, sharing silence, having
a camaraderie.
